Abstract

The survey of population iodine nutrition, as measured by UI excretion, in generalized studies from 1999 and 2000, revealed the persistence of mild-moderate iodine deficiency in 2/3 of population. In 2002 was introduced a new legislation of USI for household and bakery industry. The monitoring of urinary iodine excretion in schoolchildren after USI showed an increase of median UIC from 67.5 in 2000-2002 to 127.5 μg/l in 2006. The study reports data on iodine nutrition in pregnant women after USI and looks after a correlation of low UIC registered with thyroid function of PW and neonate at birth. UIC was measured in 507 PW samples in 2000-2002 – median 55 μg/l, SD ± 54.36 μg/l, 947 PW samples in 2003-2005 – median 55 μg/l, SD ± 46.67 μg/l and 611 PW samples in 2006-2007 – median 80 μg/l, SD ± 62.15 μg/l. In 491 PW from 5 districts and 175 neonates from 3 districts were studied in two stages. We determined serum TSH, Tgl and UIC. TSH and Tgl were determined using the electrochemoluminiscence elecsys method (Roche). For the measurement of UIC we used Sandel and Kolthoff method. Ist group – 379 PW was selected in 2004. Median TSH values were 1.2 ?UI/ml in B. district, 1.7 ?UI/ml in Bv. district and 1.57 ?UI/ml in Buch. Mean thyroglobuline concentrations were: 12.75 ?g/l, 19.43 ?g/l and 14.67 ?g/l respectively. IInd group – 110 PW and 175 neonates was selected in 2006-2007.
The results are represented in the table. No signifiant correlation was found between low UIC in PW and thyroid insuficiency measured by TSH. Cord serum concentrations of TSH and Tgl were higher than maternal values. The iodine deficiency intake in PW was asociated with high cord serum values of TSH and Tgl.
