Results in euthyroid individuals have been conflicting. We investigated associations of thyroid function with systolic (SAP) and diastolic (DAP) arterial pressure in euthyroid subjects.
Methods: 311 euthyroid individuals (185 women, mean age 43.9±9) without a history of diabetes attending a preventive medicine program were examined. Those receiving thyroxine (10.6%) were excluded; 19.3% had hypertension, 43% had a family history for hypertension. TSH, fT4, ThAbs, insulin, glucose were measured. The “fT4.TSH product” suggested as thyrotroph T4 resistance-index was calculated.
Results: TSH range was 0.1-8, median 1.4mU/L, fT4 range was 11.5-25.2pmol/L, median 17.4). Hypertensive patients had higher TSH levels (p=0.02); those with a family history of hypertension had higher DBP (78.41±12.3 vs 75.5±12.12 mmHg, p=0.04) but similar TSH levels. Hypertensive patients belonged more frequently to the subgroup with TSH>2mU/L (p=0.045). TSH and the “fT4.TSH product” were positively associated with DAP (p<0.03). In the subgroup of individuals with TSH≤2.5 mU/L, TSH and “fT4.TSH product” were positively correlated with SAP (p=0.044, p=0.026) and DAP (p><0.001); in multivariate analysis the “fT4.TSH product” was a significant predictor of DBP independently of HOMA-IR and BMI. Similar associations were found when only the non-hypertensive subjects were analysed (p=0.004); Patients without hypertension but positive family history for hypertension belonged more frequently to the subgroup with TSH>2 mU/L (p=0.056). A history of hypertension was more frequent among patients with positive antiTG antibodies (ns).
Conclusions: In euthyroid individuals the associations of thyroid function with arterial pressure remains significant even when stricter TSH levels are considered. The “freeT4.TSH” product appears to be an even stronger predictor of DAP, independently of HOMA insulin resistance index and obesity.

Alevizaki M.1, Saltiki K.2, Voidonikola P.3, Anastasiou E.2, Stamatelopulos K.3, Papamichael Ch.3 1Endocrine Unit, Evgenidion Hospital, Athens University School of Medicine, Greece, 2Dept Medical Therapeutics, Alexandra Hospital, Athens University School of Medicine, Greece., 3Vascular Laboratory, Dept of Medical Therapeutics, Alexandra Hospital, Athens University School of Medicine Abstract Objectives: Overt hypothyroidism has been associated with arterial Read More

[45,2,9

post-1358","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-volume-7-issue-3","category-journal-articles","category-volume-7
["GET
