This hypothesis offers iodine deficiency and subtle thyroid abnormalities as potential preventable risk factors for gastric cancer. The major cause may refer to common embryological origin of gastric and thyroid cells or the role of iodine as an antioxidant, antiproliferative trace element.<br \/><strong>Methods:<\/strong> We investigated body iodine reserve, thyroid gland function and the existence of any autoimmune process in 40 recently diagnosed gastric adenocarcinoma patients versus 80 healthy matched controls in an endemic region for gastric cancer. The indices were urine iodine level, thyroid gland physical and ultrasonographical examination, TSH serum level, T4 and T3 total and free serum levels and anti-TPO antibody serum level.<br \/><strong>Results:<\/strong> We found thyroid ultrasonographical examination, a better indicator of past iodine body supply or chronic iodine deficiency, is related more strongly with gastric cancer than urine iodine level, a sensitive indicator of current total body iodine reserve. Furthermore, thyroid abnormalities like euthyroid goiter, sick thyroid syndrome were more frequent among our patients compared to controls.
