Few studies systematically reported changing goiter prevalence with respect to resolution of ID, in an ID region, prospectively. Current study, evaluated the sonographic goiter prevalence with respect to the change in median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) among 9 to 11 years school age children (SAC) in Ankara before and 5 and 10 years after (1997-2002-2008) the mandatory iodination of the table salts.<br \/><strong>Material-Method:<\/strong> During Turkish Iodine Surveys, every year, 300-400 SAC, had been studied with UIC from the same primary schools from Ankara. STV of the SAC have been measured at the beginning of the mandatory iodination (1997) and in 5 years intervals afterwards (2002 and 2007). The ratio of the goitrous children have been evaluated using WHO recommendations for the age and sex.<br \/><strong>Results:<\/strong> The mean thyroid volumes decreased from 9.1 mL to 2.9 mL for 9 years old female SAC; from 6.7 mL to 2.8 mL for 9 years old male SAC; from 7.8 mL to 3.2 mL for 10 years old female SAC; from 7.2 mL to 3 mL for 10 years old male SAC; from 12 mL to 4.5 mL for 11 years old female SAC; from 8.6 mL to 3.3 mL for 11 years old male SAC within the past 10 years (1997-2008) <br \/><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong> As a result of the mandatory iodination of the table salts, moderate ID in 1997, improved to mild ID in 2001 and iodine intake was sufficient by 2004, goiter prevalence decreased from 25 % in 1997 to 12.3 % and 1.3 % in 2002, 2008 respectively.
