Abstract<\/h2>\n

Objective:<\/strong> To evaluate quality of life among thyroid patients, using a new thyroid specific quality of life questionnaire.
Methods:<\/strong> The comprehensive, psychometrically validated version of a new thyroid specific questionnaire, evaluating quality of life multi-dimensionally with 13 scales, was completed by a cross-sectional sample of 909 (response rate 69%) thyroid patients with non-toxic goitre (261), toxic nodular goitre (144), Graves hyperthyroidism (163), thyroid associated ophthalmopathy (TAO) (94) and autoimmune hypothyroidism (198). Scales are scored 0 (no complaints) to 100 (most complaints). Data were tested for overall differences among the five patient groups with ANOVA (SAS 9.1.3, PROC GLM, type III F-test) and analysed in radar plots (PROC GRADAR). Analyses were performed in the total sample, across treatment groups and current thyroid status, as well as in narrower, clinically homogeneous subsamples of each patient group.
Results:<\/strong> In the total sample, tiredness was the most frequent complaint, followed by emotional problems (emotional susceptibility, depressivity and anxiety). Statistically significant differences between patient groups were found on the goitre scale, with goitre patients scoring highest (score=23), the hyperthyroid scale, with Graves patients scoring highest (27), the hypothyroid scale, with patients with autoimmune hypothyroidism scoring highest (28), the eye complaint scale, tiredness scale, cosmetic complaint scale and the social-, daylife- and sexlife impairment scales with TAO-patients scoring highest (scores 33, 55, 36, 18, 28, 33, respectively), on the emotional susceptibility scale, where Graves patients scored highest (37) and on the cognitive complaints scale, with TAO-patients and patients with autoimmune hypothyroidism scoring highest (26). No differences were found on the anxiety and depression scales. Analyses in the clinically homogenous samples showed the same pattern, with increased inter-diagnostic differences.
Conclusions:<\/strong> Clinically meaningful, statistically significant differences between thyroid patient groups were found in 11 of 13 quality of life scales. In general, TAO-patients were those most severely impacted. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
