It is well documented that TAO influences the patients quality of life negatively. Recently attention has been directed towards the impact of the patients bodily change and studies show how negatively experienced body image is a major psychosocial sequale. The consequences of TAO have not been investigated in relation to the negatively bodily change using qualitative methods. This study explores how patients with TAO experience the bodily change on their interpersonal behaviour.
Methods: An ethnographic approach using interviews and participant observation. A total of 13 patients diagnosed with moderate to severe TAO and receiving treatment in a thyroid clinic were included. Grounded theory methodology was used to analyse data. The local ethics committee approved the study.
Results: This study revealed that experienced bodily change had considerable consequences for interpersonal behaviour in patients with TAO. Deviating eyes was the dominating experience, including 3 dimensions; deviating appearance, deviating visual function, deviating visual sensibility. TAO made it difficult to make eye contact with other people and use the eyes for communication. The participants experienced how people stared at them, acted unpleasantly, avoided them, and misunderstood their facial expressions. TAO made the participants change their interpersonal behaviour with regard to reduced contact with others and everyday activities such as shopping, reading, driving and working.
Conclusion: TAO is a challenging disease, hard to treat and unpredictable, making it difficult for patients and others to understand the meaning of TAO. The findings of this study contribute to the clarification of essential elements of living with TAO and development of guidelines for supporting and informing patients.

Jensen A.L.1, Harder I.2 1Department of Medical Endocrinology, Aarhus Hospital, Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark, 2Institute of Public Health, Department of Nursing Science, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Aarhus, Denmark Abstract Background and Aims: Thyroid Associated Ophthhalmopathy (TAO) is characterized by altered appearance of face and eyes and changed visual function.
